Visiting Mrs. Bertha Harris

Sunday, we decided to go on the Highland Open Studio Tour.  Our first stop was the Bertha Harris Folk Art Gallery on Kings Highway.  Mr. Harris greeted us outside on the porch and told us to go on inside. Upon entering the gallery, we were greeted by Mrs. Harris in the kitchen dishing out homemade peach cobbler. The gallery itself was filled with people looking at and talking about the art. Mrs. Bertha asked me to help serve the cobber and ice cream so she could talk with her guests. I agreed and my grandson went and made himself at home on the sofa. Mrs. Bertha's art tells the story of her childhood, of growing up on a plantation. I loved listening as she told the bicyclists who were there the stories behind the art pieces. Bertha uses vibrant, rich colors in all of her art. She paints on whatever "canvas" she finds that speaks to her. I noticed that she uses a lot of reclaimed wood as her canvas. Old doors and ceiling fan blades make interesting foundations for her unique style of folk art. Recently, she has been making bags (purses and totes) and other fabric art. She has even created a portrait from fabric. After some more peach cobbler and a quick visit with Ron Smith, who had his art set up on the patio, we were off to the next stop on the tour.
