Delta Whiskey Art

My friend Dan opened his first solo show the other night at Red River Brewing Co. in Shreveport. Dan really proves that art is about perception. The more you look at his paintings, the more you can see in them. Trust me, there is more to his art than what meets the eye. Dan hurls the colors at the canvas with the tenacity of unicorn spit. No, seriously, one of the pieces is titled "Unicorn Spit" and I love it. Something about the blue and purple in this one really drew me in. And then there is that colorful burst of unicorn spit in the center of the canvas, like, Pow-in your face! Ptooey! Next to Unicorn Spit is my other favorite piece, titled "The Reach". The fluid movement of the lines and the colors against the black and white background, reminds me of an ocean wave. I grew up near the ocean and it is such an important part of my life. Four Openings...One Night

Well, we had a good time tonight. We started at the East Bank Gallery. It was hard to make our way through the gallery because we had to stop and touch every piece, which was the point. I will definitely have to go back, because I know I didn't get to see everything. Several pieces really captured our attention, especially the interactive ones. I will have to go back and take pictures of them, it was way too crowded to get pictures tonight. I particularly enjoyed watching people touch and experience the art. We managed to find the snack table, of course. We had pretzel thins, which if you haven't tried them, you really should, with dip. There were fruit and veggie trays and some fancy blueberry lemonade and strawberry something (I don't remember what it was), but it looked f.a.n.c.y. Padraic and I found a quiet corner to munch. Logan Mansion, Shreveport, LA - Pt 2 - The Families

As I may have mentioned before, the Logan Mansion was built in 1897 by Lafayette Robert Logan, who was a beer and ice manufacturer. He displayed his wealth in every facet of his home which was designed by Shreveport architect, Nathaniel Sykes Allen. Adolphus Busch frequently visited Mr. Logan at his home when he would come to inspect the brewery in Shreveport. Mr. & Mrs. Logan did not have any children and when they passed away, the house was sold. Mr. Logan died in 1919 at the age of 74 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery, which can be seen from the house. The house was sold in the same year to Wade Emerson Hampton, a conductor for the Kansas City Southern Rail Road. In 1918, Hampton had invented a drill bit that he sold to the oil industry for $100,000. He was lucky to be able to provide such a grand home for his wife and eight children.
